| Music means a lot of things to many people, but sometimes we seem to forget that it is, and always has been, a part of our real lives and our communities. Music, in other words, doesn't have to be presented to thousands of people in formal concerts, or produced in a gazillion track shiny studio. It exists beyond the confines of commerce, even though we often perceive commercial activity as the measure of musical success. The Unity Sessions are live recordings held at Joburg's Unity Gallery. We (the producers) invite a musician or a band, a few friends and some beer around. Sometimes the sessions are unrehearsed. Lucas, the drummer on Meropa's CD, for example, had just gotten out the show when Andy arrived to tell him he was recording in half an hour. Other times, however, artists will put together a rehearsed set for the recording. It all depends, really.... |  |
